The royal capital of Asturias and birthplace of the Camino — where King Alfonso II began the first pilgrimage.

A short history

Founded in the 8th century, Oviedo became the capital of the Christian Kingdom of Asturias. From here in the 9th century, King Alfonso II walked to Santiago to verify the discovery of Saint James's tomb — opening what would become the Camino Primitivo, the original Camino de Santiago.
