The eight towns on the Francés that deserve more than a passing night — for their food, their beauty, or the quiet magic they hold.

Most pilgrims sleep in a town and walk on at dawn. These eight deserve a real evening — or even a rest day.
Saint-Jean-Pied-de-Port. Spend the day before you start exploring the citadel and the cobbled rue de la Citadelle.
Pamplona. A real city with a beating heart. Wander Plaza del Castillo, eat pintxos on Calle Estafeta, visit the cathedral.
Estella. The most underrated medieval town on the route. Don't miss the wine fountain at Irache the next morning.
Logroño. The food capital of La Rioja. Do Calle Laurel for tapas and Rioja.
Burgos. The Gothic cathedral alone is worth a rest day.
León. Stained glass, Barrio Húmedo, and Gaudí's lesser-known Casa Botines.
Astorga. Tiny but punching above its weight: a Gaudí palace, a chocolate museum, and the maragato cuisine.
Villafranca del Bierzo. The hidden jewel before the climb to O Cebreiro. Quiet, beautiful, with a 12th-century church where pilgrims too sick to continue could still earn the indulgence.
