Best Shoes for Walking the Camino de Santiago (2026 Guide)
Trail runners, hiking shoes, or boots? An honest review of the most common Camino footwear, with picks for wide feet, hot weather, and the rainy Norte.
March 8, 2026 · 11 min read

Footwear is the single most important decision you'll make for your Camino. Get it wrong and the trip can be miserable. Here's the current state of the art in 2026.
The big shift in the last decade: most pilgrims now walk in trail runners, not boots. The trails are well-graded, you're carrying a light pack, and lighter shoes mean fewer blisters.
Best overall trail runner: Hoka Speedgoat 6 — cushioned, grippy, wide toe box.
Best for wide feet: Altra Lone Peak 9 — zero-drop and roomy. Takes some adjustment if you're used to traditional shoes.
Best low hiking shoe: Salomon X Ultra 5 GTX — Gore-Tex for the Norte and Galician rain.
Best for hot weather (no Gore-Tex): Hoka Challenger ATR or Altra Lone Peak (non-waterproof). Your feet need to breathe.
Should you bring boots? Only if you have weak ankles, are carrying 12+ kg, or are walking in winter snow. Otherwise no.
Sizing: go up half a size. Feet swell after a week of walking.
Break them in for at least 50 km before you fly. Brand new shoes on day one is a guarantee of misery.
Always pack a second pair of light shoes — Crocs, Birkenstocks, or sandals — for evenings.
