The Camino Francés is, in many ways, a pilgrimage through architecture. For nearly a thousand years, every village, monastery, and bishop's seat along the route has competed to welcome — and impress — the walking faithful.
Below are ten churches you should make time for, listed roughly in the order you'll meet them. None require a detour of more than a few minutes from the trail.
1. Iglesia de Santa María de Eunate (Navarra) — A perfect octagon in the middle of a wheat field. Its origins remain mysterious; some believe it was built by the Knights Templar.
2. Catedral de Burgos — UNESCO-listed Gothic masterpiece, with the tomb of El Cid in its nave.
3. Iglesia de San Martín de Frómista — Often called the most perfect Romanesque church in Spain.
